Hot or Not? Tang Music Box in Clarke Quay

What it is: Singapore’s newest karaoke complex spans across 5,000 sq. m. of space right above favourite Clarke Quay bars The Highlander and The Pump Room.

What’s hot: Deny it all you want, but if someone suggests “karaoke”, you’re likely to think “lup sup”. (No? Liar.) And even if what you really wanted to do was gather your National Service (NS) friends round to practice the “Superbass” rap together without being judged, the only venue options available would be the Party World KTV Family Karaoke or Cash Studio Karaoke studios. Not that they’re bad, but sometimes, what you really want after a day of manual labour or endless mind-numbing meetings is a bit of imagination, and Tang Music Box offers a good dose of that. The entire place boasts a cheery, metropolitan vibe with rooms available in six different capacities — Mini, Small, Medium, Large, Premier and Club  — and decorated to represent the vibe in a “super city” like Shanghai. The littlest room is our favourite — squeezing three or four people in a booth-like space complete with a mini screen ala Sakae Sushi’s digital menu really makes us feel like we’re in a noraebang in Seoul. But what we really like is The Meeting Place, a snack store of sorts right smack in the middle of the reception area. This is where you’ll be blowing your minimum spend (SGD60 — 1,500 depending on which room you book) — the party snack heaven has everything, including Hello Kitty biscuit tins, caramel popcorn, sea salt chips, beer and bottles of Martell.  Aside from the minimum spend, there’s a tiny cover charge of SGD5 — 10 per three-hour block, which we must say is pretty reasonable.

What’s not: Other than the few live music bars that have been there forever, Clarke Quay’s become one of those tourist attractions where otherwise great nightlife brands come to die. The idea of a new KTV lounge in Clarke Quay is unlikely to excite anyone looking for good, clean fun. We hope to fix that a little with our…

Verdict: Very hot. Tang Music Box has all the ingredients for a fantastic night out.
