Cool gimmick, Marina Square

We think shopping malls’ idea of what Christmas in Singapore should be like — fake snow, lots of useless styrofoam statues, lights that sometimes make you think it’s Diwali — is lame.

There. We said it.

And, it’s been a really, really long time since we last cared about who won the best dressed building in town during the festive season (Tangs always aces it, anyway).

But what Marina Square is doing sounds genuinely cool.

They’re using augmented reality (AR) on smartphones to make Santa, reindeer and other Christmassy elements look like they’re actually interacting with you on camera.

There are about 10 photo and video sections within a 3,500 sq. ft. space in the shopping mall, each with its own unique feature, but the most awesome one it seems, is the one where you look like you’re standing on a cracking glacier, surrounded by moving polar bears. There are even sound effects to make you feel like you’re really in the Arctic.

We don’t always say this about festive season gimmicks, but you should try it out! And show us!
