Lui Tuck Yew looking into reducing liquor licenses and marking drinking areas in Little India

Minister for Transport and member of parliament for Moulmein-Kallang GRC Lui Tuck Yew posted a statement on his Facebook page stating that there is a need to look thoroughly into how big a role alcohol played in the Little India riot that happened yesterday night.

He suggests limitations are imposed on the number of shops selling liquor, the amount of alcohol shops are permitted to sell, the location where alcohol can be consumed and the hours permitting alcohol consumption.

In the statement, Mr. Lui revealed he had visited Race Course Road and spoken to a number of residents, many of whom were frightened by the incident even though some have lived through much worse in the 60s.

The decision to look into alcohol licensing has drawn comments from netizens with some claiming that it does not solve the root of the problem.

One Facebook user said that new alcohol limitations are merely temporary solutions to perhaps a bigger underlying issue that needs to be addressed and discussed in parliament.

The rioting in Little India is said to have occurred moments after 33-year-old Indian national Sakthivel Kumaravelu was knocked down by a bus.

The riot left three police cars, one motorbike and an ambulance burnt and 18 casualties — 10 whom are police officers and four whom are SCDF officers.
