53 involved in the Little India riot will be sent back to home countries

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has announced that 53 people — 52 Indian nationals and one Bangladeshi — involved in the Little India riot on Dec. 8 will be sent back to their home countries.

Arrested in an island-wide operation on the morning of Dec. 17, they will not be charged because their involvement has been deemed not so egregious, but are also not allowed to return to Singapore after their deportation.

Commissioner of Police Ng Joo Hee said in a statement that with the deportation of the 53, police action against suspected rioters will come to an end soon.

The official number of people charged for their connection to the rioting is now 28, after two new accused persons went to court, also on Dec. 17, and charges on seven of the original 35 were withdrawn.

“Moving forward, we do not expect to be arresting, charging or repatriating many more persons. Of course, should new information or evidence come to light, police will pursue them to their logical conclusions,” he added.
