Submissions for NMPs now open — find out what kind of persons will make the cut

A Special Select Committee of Parliament has invited the public to submit suitable candidates for the next batch of Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs).

According to a press release by the Office of the Clerk of Parliament, candidates should “have rendered distinguished public service, or who have brought honour to the Republic, or who have distinguished themselves in the field of arts and letters, sports, culture, the sciences, business, industry, the professions, social or community service or the labour movement”.

Only candidates who qualify for the appointment will be considered and the final decision rests with the president.

Up to nine NMPs are admitted, under Singapore’s constitution, to ensure a wide representation of community views in Parliament. The term for the current batch of NMPs ends this August.

Those who wish to submit the names can do so by 4:30pm on May 20 via forms downloaded from the Parliament website or physically collected at the Parliament House (1 Parliament Place, Singapore 178880) from 8am — 6pm, Mondays to Fridays.
