Western Singapore becomes test-bed for smart city solutions

Jurong Lake District (JLD) (pictured) will undergo several pilots and trials of smart technologies, such as using video analytics for traffic conditions at junctions.

Minister for Communications and Information, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim shared this at the opening ceremony of the annual Infocomm Media Business Exchange (imbX) on June 17.

This is in line with the country’s vision of becoming a Smart Nation. “As part of a Smart Nation, we are also looking into using technology to provide services and applications that can benefit the people. For example, we are exploring smart home solutions, particularly in the areas of wellness, active aging and energy efficiency,” he said.

Dr Yaacob added the industry can contribute by partnering the government in establishing common Internet of Things (IoT) standards within the home setting, as well as identifying new innovations in the home space.

JLD will be the largest commercial and regional centre outside Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD), and is envisioned to be a mixed-used urban precinct characterised by sustainable development and connectivity.

The imbX will showcase some of the ideas being developed in JLD, such as a District Management solution for sustainable high-density districts that optimise land use.
