Who deserves to be ‘on top’? Local bloggers spark social media catfight

There’s beef between “Asia Pacific’s Top Blogger” and the “Celebrity Blogger”!

Xiaxue has struck again, creating tension between her and twenty-year-old blogger Eunice Annabel.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the online community then you would be utterly clueless as to what’s going on; but you must have at least heard of social media marketing agencies Nuffnang and Gushcloud.

Both Nuffnang and Gushcloud are blog cartels that provide marketing services and manage a group of bloggers for endorsements and advertisements deals etc. Bloggers under Nuffnang are ieatishootipost,Velda TanBong Qiu Qiu; and the bloggers under Gushcloud are Berlin Ng HuixuanxuanTammy TayNaomi Neo, just to name a few.

Eunice Annabel, a Singapore blogger under Gushcloud, drew attention after uploading a picture on herInstagram on July 25. Mustering a poised look, she sits posed in the centre of 12 other fellow bloggers and her caption boasts: “So you wanna be on top? Gotta beat us first.”

Oooph, really bold words indeed! The photo has since garnered over 5,000 likes but definitely did not earn the thumbs up (I’m assuming) from veteran blogger Wendy Cheng, or better known as her pseudonym, Xiaxue.

Xiaxue, managed by Nuffnang, has been blogging for nearly 11 years. She is well known for her headstrong character through her honest blog posts, and also after the 2008 catfight with blogger Dawn Yang, which became widespread across entertainment news.

The day after Eunice’s bold statement, Xiaxue, 30, made her thoughts known by posting a similar picture on Instagram with the following caption: “Wanna be on top? Why don’t you quintuple your followers first? You look like you can’t count, so maybe you can’t. Ask your math teacher for some help.”

What is an interesting distraction is not how Xiaxue and Eunice voiced their opinions in long photo captions – and insisted that they are not referring to any one individual – but the feisty arguments Instagram followers are having in the comment section. Eunice has also mentioned that it was all just a misunderstanding and that the phrase “So you wanna be on top?” was merely referring to a tagline from the TV show America’s Next Top Model.

Under the controversial photo, fellow Nuffnang blogger Yutakis James, provided his two cents worth in Xiaxue’s Instagram comment field. As expected, he has nothing but support for his friend, as he said his piece and laughed it off.

Eunice’s underpinning of fans are holding up the fort at base camp with a couple of individuals squabbling over what seems to have already trailed off from the original topic, and evolved into a dispute of personal attacks, accusation of fake accounts, cowardice and parent’s marital statuses…

Subsequently, both Xiaxue and Eunice uploaded yet another photo on Instagram. Their captions so tactfully crafted and layered with subtleness that it is not wise to be calling them out for it. Though Eunice’s mention of “NUFFsaid” doesn’t seem convincing to create the positive influence that she claims she wants to.

Besides blogging, Eunice, a soon-to-be graduate of Temasek Polytechnic, is also active on her Youtube Channel. Her mixed Chinese and Peranakan looks proved beneficial to her modelling career as she was given a chance – for the second time – to fly to New York City (NYC) for a Sunsilk photoshoot. She was also cast in Jack Neo’s latest 2014 movie, The Lion Men.

The dazzling opportunities she has had in her career is a far cry from Xiaxue’s hard-earned respect as a full-time blogger back in 2005. Perhaps also reason enough why Xiaxue can’t come to terms with the abecedarian’s usage of terms “celebrity blogger” and being “on top”.

The Singapore Ambassador for Sunsilk, tried to bring the boil down to a simmer with mention of the Instagram incident in her latest NYC rendezvous blogpost, where (at the end of her lengthy entry) she expressed gratitude to all the encouragement she has received.

This mini episode brings to surface the politics in the blogging community in Singapore. For a while now, Singapore bloggers have stayed out of the limelight of mainstream news, whereas earning more attention are Youtubers in the likes of Tosh Zhang.

Instead of forming a more close-knit blogging community between veteran and novice bloggers, could this incident be reflective of the red sea that segregates our local bloggers from one another, or simply between the two marketing agencies? Well, this is only for us sideliners to speculate and bring out the popcorn when the next public crossfire arises.

So who wins?

No, a blogger is anyone who blogs. A professional/full time blogger blogs for a living. A celebrity blogger is a term for someone who made it into celebrity status via blogging. Examples are Perez Hilton, Bryan boy etc. It has nothing to do with involvement of singing or acting. As such, those who aren’t famous have no rights to call themselves celebrity bloggers. — Xiaxue’s Instagram, in response to a comment that questioned the definition of “celebrity blogger”.
