Cool Beans: Singapore’s premiering our very own gaming convention in October

Dampened by the pop culture offerings in Singapore lately? GameStart to the rescue.

Singapore’s very own video gaming convention is happening Oct. 25-26 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Touting itself as “Southeast Asia’s premiere consumer gaming event”, the event aims to bring in the level of hype and excitement set by existing gaming convention behemoths Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) and Tokyo Games Show (TGS).

“We want to create a show that we would want to go to with our friends,” said founder of organising company Eliphant. “…our vision is to bring the buzz and fabulous content of (the) big shows to our part of the world.”‘

An early indicator of the promising scope and magnitude of GameStart is the names on the sponsorship table. Sony Playstation is main sponsor, and Red Bull and homegrown t-shirt retailers Xmashed Gear have also promised to flank the brand.

One of the confirmed event highlights is Sony’s 200sqm booth, which will feature a sizeable list of high profile names like quirky platformer Little Big Planet 3, survival-horror sensation The Evil Within and auto racing epic Driveclub,

Other than video games, attendees will also be treated to a cosplay extravaganza headed by Neo Tokyo Project, with cameos by renowned cosplay celebrities like Australia’s Yasemin Arslan, who famously portrayed Lilith in 2012’s critically acclaimed role-playing shooter Borderlands 2.

Whether or not GameStart 2014 will be a success or go down the road of dissatisfaction ala Games Convention Asia and The Games Expo will be up to the judgment of gamers come October. In any case, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a party to geek out to.

Check the GameStart website and Facebook page for ticketing deets and other updates.
