10 more MRT stations in Singapore will be getting the ‘traffic light’ system, aimed at relieving human traffic on platforms, by the first half of next year, TODAY reports.
With the installation of this system – fitted at the entrance to MRT stations – commuters will be aware of exactly how congested the train platforms are. Red light indicates that the platform is experiencing overload and commuters should anticipate a longer wait; an amber light denotes a probable wait of a few trains; a green light signals that everything is good to go. Flashing red lights signify that train services have been disrupted or delayed.
The ‘traffic lights’ were put on trial at Ang Mo Kio station last December and at Tanjong Pagar station earlier in January, where they were met with moderate success. Out of the 1,000 commuters surveyed by SMRT, 80 per cent remarked that they were aware of the mechanism and recommended that it should be put in place at more stations, while only 60 per cent admitted that they actually referred to the lights before entering the station.
SMRT have declined to name the 10 stations they’re planning to install the systems, but it’s good to know that they noted it would be the ones that have high passenger flow.
