Your Childhood Ruined: Hello Kitty is not a cat

In a cold affirmation that the world is out to destroy your childhood memories, Sanrio themselves have stated that their most popular mascot (and pop-culture behemoth) Hello Kitty is not a cat.

It’s bamboozling and frankly a little mind-blowing to all, especially for the multitudes of Singaporeans who’ve lined up hours outside McDonalds for Hello Kitty paraphernalia, but it’s true. According to a report by the LA Times, University of Hawaii Anthropologist and Hello Kitty expert Christine R. Yano was firmly corrected by Sanrio when she was preparing her written texts for an exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum.

Instead, Sanrio insists, Hello Kitty is a “cartoon character” and “a little girl”, stressing that it has never been outrightly portrayed as a cat, pointing out that she has a pet cat of her own called “Charmmy Kitty”.

Obviously this official reveal has betrayed everything that we know about Hello Kitty, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Vocal powerhouse Josh Groban is visibly upset, and has expressed his appropriate disapproval on Twitter. Snoopy on the other hand assures the world that he is, in fact, a dog.
