Fatal injuries at workplaces rise in first half of 2014

There has been an increase in the number of fatal workplace injuries in the first half of the year, according to the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) institute.

The latest statistics by WSH show the number of fatal injuries occurring at workplaces in Singapore has jumped from 25 in January to June last year to 30 in the same period this year, with the construction sector being the main contributor with 17 cases of deaths reported.

Other major contributors include the Transportation & Storage sector with six cases of fatal injuries this year and the Logistics sector with three cases.

There has also been a 14 percent increase in workplace minor injuries from last year, jumping from 5,249 to 6,005 cases reported over the first half of 2014. The number of major injuries at workplaces remained about the same.

The report also reveals that occupational diseases have gone down from last year, mainly due to the reduction in noise-induced deafness cases.
