High-tech parking systems in HDB neighbourhoods next year

In a first for the Singapore heartlands, the Ministry of National Development has announced plans to build mechanised parking systems (MPS) in Bukit Panjang, Changi Village and Yishun.

According to the National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan’s blog, the systems are being built to meet the rising demand for car parking in HDB towns. The MPS is a solution to the lack of land available to erect conventional car parks, and the aforementioned areas have been selected due to high parking demand and severe site constraints. According to Channel NewsAsia, the MPS will be fully automated —motorists simply have to park and retrieve their vehicles through car-lifts, which automatically transfer vehicles to empty parking storage areas.

Automated parking systems have been in place in several private condos and hotels, but this initiative will introduce such technology in HDB neighbourhoods. Minister Khaw anticipates the MPS to be up and running before the end of 2015, and will provide a much-needed relief to the residents’ parking situation.
