10 great events this weekend that have nothing to do with F1

No matter how inescapable the annual Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix media blitz is, there are plenty of people who just don’t get it. In honour of those ladies and gents who treat that weekend in September no differently from any other, we’ve rounded up a list of great events happening between Sept. 19 and 21 that have absolutely nothing to do with pole positions and pit stops.

Cry, Trojans! (top pic)

Sept. 18-21, SOTA Studio Theatre, 1 Zubir Said Dr., 6338-9663. $55 from Sistic.

The Singapore International Festival of Arts 2014 continues with this interpretation of Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida. While the original play took place during the Trojan War, this production by the New York City-based Wooster Group gives it an American flavour, both in style and setting, with the Trojans replaced by Native Americans.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

Sept. 18-28, Alliance Francaise Theatre, 1 Sarkies Rd., 6737-8422. $30 from Sistic

A treat for children between the ages of two and eight, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Is an interactive show filled with humour and original music. Created by Mo Willems, who also wrote and animated for Sesame Street, it comes to Singapore after thrilling audiences in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Holiday in my Head

Sept. 18-28, Drama Centre Black Box, National Library, 100 Victoria St., 6837-8577. $35 from Sistic

If you’ve already started making plans for Christmas, then Asylum Theatre has just the production for you. Formed this year, Asylum’s debut show Holiday in my Head is actually a collection of eight short plays performed by an international cast. The whimsical compilation includes I Can Tell Your Handbag is Fake, about three women who meet on a train, each carrying the same designer handbag, and Holiday with Mr. K, about a dispirited lady from Singapore who encounters a certain man from the North Pole while on holiday in the Caribbean.

Amy Search Live in Singapore

Sept. 20, The Star Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre, 1 Vista Exchange Green, 6636-0055. $68 upwards from Sistic.

The man behind the powerful vocals that define the sound of legendary Malaysian rock band Search is back in town. Performing his solo work along with Search standards, Amy is here to promote his new album.

Awakening the Senses – of Herbs, Spices and Roots

Sept. 20, Glass Hall at the Singapore Art Museum, 71 Bras Basah Rd., 6589-9580. $19 from Sistic.

Cooking would be a bland pursuit without the aromas and flavours of herbs, spices and roots. Find out how these powerful ingredients can also be used in drinks at this workshop conducted by BarSmiths. Awakening the Senses is part of the Singapore Art Museum’s Sensorium 360° exhibition.

Looking Closely at Things – A Still Life Drawing Project

Sept. 20, Latent Spaces at Haw Par Villa, 262 Pasir Panjang Rd. $10 from Peatix.

Find beauty in an unexpected place as artist Michelle Lim takes you to Haw Par Villa’s “Sculpture Cemetery” in a guide to basic still life drawing. A cordoned off area within the park, the Sculpture Cemetery is where damaged sculptures are abandoned and left at the mercy of the elements.

Jam Packed with Tea Session 1

THIS Buddhist Film Festival 2014

Now in its third year, the Thus Have I Seen (THIS) Buddhist Film Festival 2014 features another line-up of thought provoking films. Sixteen films from 11 countries will be screened during the festival, with 15 making their Singapore premieres. Among the highlights are Matthieu Ricard – On the Path to Compassion, the story of a French scientist who left his life and career behind to study Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas, and 108 Yaks – A Journey of Love and Compassion, which follows a monk as he leads a herd of yaks to freedom.
