Singapore ranks fifth in Global Food Security Index

Singapore’s jumped 11 spots up to become fifth in the world in terms of the availability, affordability, quality and safety of food, according to the EIU Global Food Security Index (GSFI) 2014.

In a blog post, Minister for National Development Mr. Khaw Boon Wan described the results as “not bad” for a city “without much agricultural land”.

He attributed the jump to improved stability in local food production, sufficiency of supply and our focus on nutritional plans.

Singapore’s food is largely supplied by other countries, but there’s been a constant effort to encourage local produce. Just last month, the Agri-Food & Veterinry Authority (AVA) inaugurated the Agriculture Productivity Fund to help local farmers expand the volume of their produce and heighten productivity. This $63 million project aims to remodel the local produce scene into a “high tech and progressive one”.

In addition, there’ve been programmes and research and development projects targeted at reducing food wastage within the food production line, though general food wastage among consumers is still a pressing problem, said Mr. Khaw.
