Vibro, a kind of bacteria that can cause foodborne infection in humans, has been detected in fish samples extracted from Singapore’s coastal fish farms.
Typically found in saltwater, these species of bacteria can cause diarrhea, vomiting and fever in human through consuming undercooked seafood or exposing an open wound to contaminated water.
According to Channel NewsAsia, the infection has killed an enormous amount of fish in 44 farms.
Singapore Marine Aquaculture Cooperative Chairman Phillip Lim said he has lost about 60 tonnes of fish, about 96 percent of the stock he first had.
Although dead fish is disposed of, those infected, but alive, are still being brought onto local market shelves. The public is advised to thoroughly cook their fish for safety reasons.
