Yesterday, SMRT Ltd (Feedback) posted a screenshot of an email exchange between a customer and a broker claiming to have data on 900,000 people registered with online shopping site Zalora.
The post went viral with over 400 shares.
In a statement to the Vulcan Post, Zalora has declared that the database captured in the screenshot isn’t theirs, and that their database is extremely secure and has never been sold, monetised or shared with third parties.
“We do not compromise on our customer’s privacy. Moreover we are committed to finding more ways of keeping our database as secure as possible, as customer data privacy is of the utmost importance to us,” the statement read.
This isn’t the first time the e-commerce platform owned by Rocket Internet has been implicated in a case of large-scale privacy breach.
In April this year, a supposed data broker wrote in to Tech in Asia (TIA) with email screenshots just like the one shared by SMRT Ltd (Feedback) claiming to have information on customers with Zalora, as well as CloutShoppe, Deal.com.sg, Groupon, Lazada and Reebonz.
Lazada and Zalora both denied the allegations in the TIA report.
