Coconuts Hot Spot: The Hangar

The Hangar, a new cafe offering top-notch coffee and honest comfort food, stakes its claim at Kampong Glam.

Although the restaurant is now only open for breakfast, lunch, and brunch, we’re already loving the vibe: unpretentious, bold, and delicious. A seductive promise is spray-painted on the Arab Street newbie’s storefront, it reads: “SEXY COFFEE”. Next to that, a promise of their offering: “Coffee, Sandwiches, Salads… and Shit Like That”. It’s all the work of a bunch of energetic young dudes with a background in piloting.

It’s got an authentic atmosphere and the passion of the owners is felt in the space. The interiors and fixtures, such as the tables, chairs, and lights, are left trendily undone and were handcrafted by co-owner, Pav Khailani, who’s fresh off a stint managing low-key Telok Ayer hang-out, Sarnies.

Taking a page from the latter, The Hangar serves up some mean sandwiches and brunch plates. However, this new kid on the block boasts a well-rounded selection of coffee which is specially curated. There are single origin coffees sourced from all corners of the globe – from Bali to Tanzania to the Republic of Congo. If you’re going at it hard, there are great espresso blends too. However, if you’re looking for a double kick, hit two vices with one drink and order the Espresso Martini – we promise it’ll become one of their signatures.

Food-wise, expect delicious, hearty, and comforting Aussie-inspired eats here. The menu is small, the focus is felt, and the dishes are prepared to a tee. Their sandwiches (available on amazing freshly-baked breads like sourdough, rye, or ciabatta) take inspiration from various cuisines. There’s the Greek Chicken ($11); the Japanese-inspired deep-fried delight, Kazuya’s Katsu Special ($11, top pic); and the Smoky Norwegian ($11) which is filled with capers, dill, and Scandi-staple smoked salmon.

If you’re blessed to work around the area, it’s a great early morning spot for a quick bite on go. The flaky and buttery croissant stuffed with ham and melted cheese ($7) and a cuppa Joe is a great fuel for your day. If you’ve got more time for the first meal of the day, savour the Smashed Feta Cheese and Avocado Toast ($8). It’s a lovely new classic which has yet to catch on in Singapore and we’re glad that The Hangar is doing it justice.
