Video: Gurmit Singh talks about life after MediaCorp, which he’s leaving after 20 years

Actor and comedian Gurmit Singh has announced he will not be renewing his full-time contract with MediaCorp when it expires at the end of the year, so he can spend more time with his family.

According TODAY, Singh, who’s best known for his role as Phua Chu Kang in the namesake ’90s family comedy, wants to “pay (his family) back”.

“If I don’t, I’ll be a horrible father and husband,” he said. “I keep missing important milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries.”

He related how there would be times when he would be entertaining an audience, who’d be oblivious to the family celebration that was happening at home without him. He also described how he missed his firstborn Gabrielle’s first steps.

“I left the house and the baby was still crawling. I came home late — the baby was walking.”

The 49-year-old said he was blessed to have been able to do something he loved for 20 years, but enjoys being at home with his family even more.

He will continue to work with the MediaCorp Artiste Management unit on commercial engagements, but will be more selective with jobs, a move he realises will significantly cut his family’s overall spending.

This means calling a new three-bedroomed apartment home and forgoing business class travel.
