Flooded malls, lightning strikes and other scary scenes from Singapore’s storm-filled weekend

T’was a stormy weekend in Singapore that left many parts of the country cold, wet and even flooded as the monsoon season continues to batter the Southeast Asian region.

The Public Utilities Board notified the public yesterday on Twitter about their forecast of heavy rain, gusty wind and the high flood risk, with water levels rising dreadfully close to maximum capacity.

In the east, sections of Tampines Mall were flooded as the rainwater created a heavy load on the rooftop, leaking excess water into the shopping centre. According to TODAY, water streamed into common areas on levels two and three of the mall.

Humour site SGAG uploaded footage of a fearsome lightning strike at East Coast Park, where a tree was ignited briefly by the electrical discharge. Never stand under a tree when it’s storming outside folks.

Several trees had also toppled from the might of the rain, endangering traffic near Kaki Bukit Avenue 4 and blocking pedestrians at Holland Avenue.

Rainfall for November and December 2014 is expected to be about 20 percent above the long-term average of 256.6mm and 288.4mm respectively.
