Chingay Parade set to be even grander and over the top this year for SG50

The largest street parade in Asia levels up this year specially for the SG50 celebrations, and rightfully so since The New York Times highlighted Chingay Parade as one of the reasons why Singapore’s a top travel destination this year.

TODAY reports that this year’s parade features a record number of participating countries with a contingent of 1,100 international participants. A total of 15 nations — including first timers Rwanda — will be joining in the Chingay celebrations, as compared to only six last year.

Originally a Chinese-specific event to usher in the Chinese New Year since its first street parade in 1973, the parade took on a multicultural flavour in ’76 and soon featured foreign participants in ’87, all marching from the main parade site into the heartlands together with extravagant floats in a riotous display of vibrant color and cultural diversity.

Audiences can look forward to an award-winning Russian dance production, a 100-member traditional Thai dance performance, Rwandan drummers and more.

This year’s main parade will take place on Feb 27 and Feb 28 at the F1 Pit Building — more information available on the the official Chingay website.
