Fire breaks out at Broadway Hotel, 2 sent to hospital for smoke inhalation

Thick plumes of smoke filled the air along Serangoon Road when a fire broke out at the Broadway Hotel yesterday around 5pm.

A large crowd — mostly consisting of foreign workers living around the area — gathered around the incident site, located at the junction of Race Course Lane and Serangoon Road. The fire was seen raging at the ground-floor restaurant of the hotel, with flames licking the top of the ceiling and the ventilation air ducts.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were able to respond quickly to the scene as a convoy of personnel and vehicles had been heading to an event nearby at Burmah Road. Two fire engines, two red rhinos, an ambulance and a support were dispatched to the site.

SCDF established that the fire originated in the kitchen of the restaurant and quickly extinguished the flames in 10 minutes. Two men were sent to hospital for treatment due to smoke inhalation.

Authorities are currently conducting investigations into the cause of the fire.
