23-year-old man arrested after three-hour attempted suicide standoff

A troubled young man was the centre of commotion at Yishun last Saturday when he perched dangerously on a 13th storey ledge for three hours, threatening to jump as as onlookers gathered in the vicinity, The New Paper reports.

Police were alerted at 10pm to a case of attempted suicide at Block 297 along Yishun Street 20, where a 23-year-old man was seen sitting on a ledge, dangling his legs. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) deployed their rescue appliances together with their Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) personnel.

SCDF officers had also set up an inflatable rescue mattress at the foot of the block, while DART personnel stood by to rappel down to the man, as he yelled at the police and the rescuers to stay away.

Around three hours into the ordeal, he climbed away from the ledge, and was quickly arrested and escorted by the police.

Investigations are currently ongoing.
