Pasir Ris fish deaths prompt AVA investigation

Off Pasir Ris, fish farmers have been finding that their fish are dying off in the past few days, and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) are investigating into the matter.

TODAY reports that some fish deaths were reported by farmers in the East Johor Straits last week, following an alert about elevated plankton levels .

The rise in plankton levels can be attributed by unpredictable weather, a higher concentration of nutrients in the seawater and poor water exchange between high and low tides.

Plankton and algal blooms form a threat to the fish population as the levels of dissipated oxygen deplete. Last year, farmers lost more than 160 tonnes of fish and several hundred thousand dollars individually.

The AVA are working closely with the farmers and have reportedly collected samples for analysis and are determining the cause of their deaths.
