Amos Yee revealed to be suffering from autism-spectrum disorder, currently remanded at IMH

A nagging suspicion on everyone’s mind has been duly confirmed in State Courts this morning — infamous blogger Amos Yee is suffering from a psychiatric disorder.

The 16-year-old appeared in court today, where District Judge Jasvender Kaur ruled that he is physically and mentally suitable for reformative training, Channel NewsAsia reports — which could mean an 18- to 30-month stint at the Reformative Training Centre to undergo structured rehabilitation programmes, foot drills and counselling.

However, it was also revealed that Yee may be suffering from autism-spectrum disorder, which includes symptoms such as clinically significant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of current functioningl as well as persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts.

As such, the judge will be exploring other sentencing options, including a mandatory treatment order. Yee has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for two weeks, pending a psychiatric report.

The teen had previously rejected probation and a term in the Reformative Training Centre, preferring a jail term instead.

He will appear in State Courts once again on Jul 6 when the psychiatric report is expected to be completed.
