36-year-old case reopened after 80-year-old fugitive Phey Yew Kok surrenders

Time won’t always make you forget.

A 36-year-old case involving a former National Trades Union Congress chairman and Member of Parliament was reopened today after the man at the center of the lawsuit surrendered himself to the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok early this week.

Phey Yew Kok, now 80 years old, had jumped bail and fled Singapore in 1980. He was charged on four counts oif criminal breach of trust totalling $83,000 on Dec 10, 1979.

“He was also charged on two counts under the Trade Unions Act for investing $18,000 of trade-union money in a private supermarket without the approval of the minister. As was normal in such cases, he was released on bail, but unusually he was not asked to surrender his passport,” according to the blog Cry Freedom.

Phey had pleaded not guilty before absconding.

According to State Courts, the charges still stand and there may be additional charges. Phey is scheduled to appear in court again on Jul 23.
