Singapore ranks fourth in world megachurch attendance, trailing behind Seoul and Houston

Surprisingly, the biggest megachurches in the world aren’t all found in the United States itself, where its concept started. In fact, the top two megachurches with the most attendees in the world are located in South Korea and Nigeria.

In another staggering revelation in a report by The Washington Post, our little red dot lands in fourth place, just behind Houston — weekly attendance in Singapore’s megachurches reach up to 117,825 people, way above Dallas (89,797 attendees) or Manila (71,000) for that matter.

The megachurch movement can be defined by its large congregations, having at least 2,000 or more people in average weekend attendance, and most often in stadium-like arenas. Despite having American roots, the movement has since gained significant traction overseas, with establishments often reporting nearly 6,000 attendees every weekend. In fact, the current largest megachurch in the world is South Korea’s Yoido Full Gospel Church, which reported more than 830,000 member as of 2007.

With megachurches such as City Harvest Church, Faith Community Baptist Church drawing thousands upon thousands every weekend to their “rock-concert-style” services, it may not be that surprising after all that Singapore has popped onto the world radar for the movement.
