General Election is on Sep 11!

Mark your calendars: Sep 11 is General Election day in Singapore.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued a Writ of Election specifying the Nomination Day on Sep 1.

The announcement was made shortly after he dissolved Singapore’s 12th Parliament on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today.

There are 89 slots for Members of Parliament, in 29 constituencies, that need to be filled.

Apart from filing their candicacy, every candidate must also obtain a Political Donation Certificate from the Registrar of Political Donations.  The candidate also needs to make an election deposit of $14,500 — or 8 per cent of the total allowances payable to a Member of Parliament in the preceding calendar year.

The Polling Day falls on a Friday and shall be a public holiday.

The People’s Action Party, which has ruled for more than 50 years with a mix of strict political controls and rapid economic progress, is widely expected to keep its overwhelming majority in the 89-seat parliament because of a fragmented opposition.

But the party will be under pressure to improve on its worst electoral performance in 2011, when it won 60 percent of votes — its lowest-ever share — despite retaining 80 seats in a block-voting system. With an AFP report.
