Coconuts Hot Spot: One Fork Two Stick Kitchen

Beer and fried chicken may not be everyone’s idea of Korean dining but at One Fork Two Stick Kitchen in Tiong Bahru, the new Korean restaurant that’s taken over a Thai eatery whose repertoire of piped-in Christian music was slightly more impressive than its bulky menu, these are the must-order items.

That’s not saying One Fork Two Stick Kitchen does not serve up traditional fare. Our meal started with an amuse-bouche of kimchi, potato salad and bean sprouts that were thoughtfully replenished as soon as they were finished. The Seafood and Green Onion Pancake ($18) and Spicy Seafood Soup ($20) were all prepared in grandly traditional manner — dripping with potent spice with a sense that everything was made from scratch.

What One Fork Two Stick does best, though, is chicken.

We tried three items: Braised Spicy Chicken with Glass Noodles ($28), and Fried Wings and Drumettes with Salad in two versions, one marinated in spicy sauce, the other in soy garlic sauce ($8 for 4 pcs, $18, 10 pcs, $36, 20 pcs). Both were glazed and double fried to finger blastin’ good.

The Braised Spicy Chicken’s soft texture melded perfectly with the dark sweet-spicy sauce, accompanied by an array of similarly braised vegetables and chilis.

The fried chicken was one of the better Korean-style fried chickens we’ve tasted around here, with a flavoured crust that’s not too thick nor cloyingly sweet. The spicy sauce, however, could do with a bit more heat, but that wasn’t too much of an issue.

One Fork Two Stick Kitchen’s first outlet is in Tanjong Pagar, but at this Kiam Tian Road branch they leave their famous barbecue offerings in the back burner to offer a much more straightforward experience.

Though the price may seem a bit steep at Tiong Bahru’s One Fork Two Stick Kitchen, trust us, it’s worth every cent.

One Fork Two Stick Kitchen is at 4 Kim Tian Road.
