Vivian Balakrishnan’s Cooling-Off Day social media boo boo due to glitchy Facebook auto-posting

Netizens came out in droves with their collective pitchforks raised when People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate was noted to have allegedly broken Cooling-Off Day regulations when a post about an election walkabout was published in the wee hours of the morning today.

On Cooling-Off Day (that’s today), all candidates are prohibited from engaging in any activities concerning the elections. That means no walkabouts, no advertisements, no meetings, and certainly no posting on social media.

However, the candidate for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC — also Minister for Environment and Water Resources — was thought to have flouted the electoral rules when screengrabs of a tweet he posted this morning went viral online. The tweet in subject has since been deleted.

Responding to the allegations, Dr Balakrishnan’s spokesperson maintained that the tweet linking to his Sept 4 Facebook post had been “auto-posting recurrently”, TODAY reports. Due to his Facebook page being linked to his Twitter account, the tweet was generated today — even though page admins tried to stop the glitch from recurring.

Oh, and they’ve even contacted Facebook headquarters to conduct an investigation into the source of the bug. Presumably, they’d like the bug to be extradited to Singapore to face a penalty of caning and a fine.

Dr Balakrishnan’s page has also been requested to be locked down to prevent further postings on Cooling-Off Day.
