Art of the week: ‘16102014’ by Kanchana Gupta

‘16102014’ by Kanchana Gupta

Part of the series Fragments in Time, this painting appears rugged and worn — an example of Gupta’s experimental style, where she visibly manipulates oil paint into a three-dimensional structure. By doing so, she creates a work of art that intelligently hovers between the lines of painting and sculpture. Composed of several layers of burnt stripped paint, Gupta is able to give her work a great sense of depth in terms of colour and texture. The different gradients of reds, paired with the raw and exposed qualities left on the surface, gives it a worn yet fragile quality. Here, Kanchana Gupta’s exploration of issues concerning social fragmentation is essentially represented through the transformative nature of her work. Nathalie Soo.
