Video: Cruel fisherman tries to hook in otters at Kallang River

This country seriously has a concerning prevalence of casual attitudes towards animal abuse. Singapore’s darling otter family came face to face with the ugly side of their adopted habitat when an angler tried to reel one of them in at Kallang River.

Captured by the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio otter family’s watchful monitor Fast Snail, the footage shows one of them getting snagged by a illegal fisher’s hook — and none of the onlookers seemed to give a hoot about the squeaks of distress. In fact, most of them chilling by the railings simply smiled on instead of telling the fisherman to cut that shit out.

A follow-up footage showed the otter limping, obviously due to the pain from the snagged hook.

Fortunately, it all ended up okay in another video taken later on, with no signs of limping or the fishing line.

“Somehow the otter pup has managed to get rid of the fishing line and is no longer limping. Hopefully, there is no fishing hook under its fur. If there’s one, and it rusts. It will be a big problem,” says Fast Snail.

As for the heartless fisherman, Fast Snail has assured that the Public Utilities Board, NParks, as well as the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES). Hopefully the errant angler becomes the… angled(?).
