Prosecution pushes for up to 12 years imprisonment for City Harvest Church convicts

As sentencing looms closer for all six convicted City Harvest Church leaders, the prosecution has recommended jail sentences of between five to 12 years for their offences.

They were all found guilty of all the charges slapped on them, mainly for misappropriating about $50 in church funds. Almost half of that money was used to bankroll the cringeworthy music career of church founder Kong Hee’s wife, Sun Ho.

The Straits Times reports that the heaviest jail sentences (11 to 12 years) were suggested for the church head Kong himself, as well as deputy senior pastor Tan Ye Peng, former church finance manager Serina Wee, and former church fund manager Chew Eng Han.

The prosecution proposed that former church finance committee member John Lam gets eight to nine years imprisonment, while former church finance manager Sharon Tan got off lightly with the suggestion of five to six years in jail.

All of them are due back in court on Friday for oral submissions on sentencing, with only Kong and Chew indicating that they are likely to appeal.
