The hullabaloo regarding Calvin Cheng’s unsettling remarks about killing terrorists and their children ain’t over just yet.
The former Nominated Member of Parliament is in the centre of attention once again regarding his comments — this time with more serious action taken in response to his online post. Cheng attracted flak from all over after making a controversial statement in a Facebook thread:
A typical statement made by the infamous right-wing rabble rouser, but even more controversial considering he’s a member of the Media Literacy Council (MLC). You can read the whole saga here — but in case of TL;DR, he’s still on the council because MLC didn’t think it was that offensive.
Opposition party People’s Power Party (PPP) however strongly disagree. They’re so perturbed by Cheng’s comment’s that they actually made a police report against him, believing that it was a “fascist statement” that “gravely threatened Singapore’s security”.
PPP did make some pretty huge leaps of logic though. “Calvin Cheng has caused enmity and hatred from the terrorists group that he threatened to hurt and kill them,” they wrote on their Facebook page.
“As Calvin is a public figure, an ex-parliamentarian and an esteemed figure who sits on the Media Literacy Council, his words will therefore carry more weight and will allow potential terrorists to think that his views represent the views of our country. This provocation potentially put our country in grave danger of terrorists attacks and will have infringed the Internal Security Act.” Alarming stuff.
Pretty sure nothing will happen though. If Cheng really did cross some boundaries, he would have been called in for investigation a long time ago.
