Alleged Yishun cat abuser to be remanded in IMH for another week; seeks bail

The alleged cat killer of Yishun appeared in court today armed with a lawyer (appointed by Law Minister K Shanmugam no less) and was ordered to stay in remand at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for another week.

Channel NewsAsia reports that 40-year-old Lee Wai Leong has also expressed through his lawyer the intent to request for bail at the next court hearing on Jan 19 in the hopes to spend Chinese New year at home.

Lee was charged on Dec 29 last year for throwing a tabby cat off the 13th floor of Block 115B along Yishun Ring Road, just one of the many cases of cat abuse that struck the district for months. He was remanded in IMH for assessment.

A week later, Shanmugam approached one of his Nee Soon GRC volunteers Josephus Tan to represent Lee pro bono after getting to know that Lee may be severely mentally unsound, and that his family could not afford a lawyer.

Under the Animals and Birds Act, Lee could be fined up to $15,000 and/or jailed for up to 18 months if convicted. He’ll appear at the next court hearing on Jan 19.
