Bad timing: Khaw Boon Wan draws flak for celebrating milestone on day of SMRT staff deaths

The Minister of Transport — a man who everyone believes to be the right man to fix public transport issues — is under a flurry of attacks by netizens who deemed him insensitive after a Facebook post.

Call it just really really bad timing, but Minister Khaw Boon Wan made a post on his Facebook page yesterday, celebrating a milestone where the Downtown Line arrived at 150 days without any service disruptions. Unfortunately, yesterday was also the day when the most tragic of train service disruptions transpired — two young SMRT staff were killed in the line of duty near Pasir Ris MRT station.

Even though Khaw did acknowledge the unfortunate accident in his post, netizens weren’t too happy that he exhibited a celebratory tone in the midst of mourning. It was at this point that the new Facebook reactions feature came in full usage — most clicked on the ‘Angry’ emoticon with folks taking issue with him trying to score brownie points in the midst of tragedy.
