Great news for the country with the highest percentage of smartphone users in the world — the nation’s public Wi-Fi service is set to get a nitrous boost in volume and intensity by 2018.
The number of Wireless@SG hot spots will be doubled to 20,000 and will enable users to surf at up to 5Mpbs, in comparison to the current 2Mpbs, according to Minister of State for Communications and Information Dr. Janil Puthucheary.
The minister was responding to queries in Parliament about current public Wi-Fi speeds being slower than standard 4G mobile networks. Dr. Janil assured that Singapore’s hotspots-to-population ratio is already pretty high (second only to Tokyo), and it’s about to get even higher with expanded services in public places such as hawker centres, hospitals, tourist spaces and more.
