Singaporean woman found dead following diving session in Indonesian waters off Gili Lawa

In a scuba diving session gone horribly wrong, a Singaporean woman was found dead in the waters of Gili Lawa in Indonesia’s Komodo National Park.

27-year-old certified autonomous diver Neo Qiu Ping Vera was first reported missing on Sunday after failing to return from scuba diving in the popular diving spot in the West Manggarai Regency.

Neo had been diving with 10 other people, reported Indonesian news publication Pos Kupang, setting out for the dive site on Saturday on a cruise boat. Following a diving session at 5pm the next day, everyone else in the group returned to the boat except for Neo, who was the only one who hadn’t surfaced.

The boat’s captain waited at hour before alerting the authorities — but as it was already dark, search-and-rescue operations could only begin on Monday morning.

The National Search and Rescue Agency Republic of Indonesia informed The Straits Times that Neo’s body was found near the dive site at 10.55am yesterday. Her body remains at a hospital in Indonesia as of yesterday evening.
