Video: The undying kampong spirit of Potong Pasir and legacy of Chiam See Tong

In rather polished final year project from 2014 by students of Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communications and Information, the unique culture of Potong Pasir’s unity and togetherness gets explored in a series of vignettes featuring interviews with its gregarious residents.

Speaking fondly of their neighbourhood’s famously tight-knit kampong spirit, folks both young and old attest to just how warm and open the town is, despite not having much amenities as a former longstanding opposition ward. “It’s simple, but there’s spirit here and that’s symbolic of what Potong Pasir is, in my opinion,” says one resident.

Change has arrived of course since the 2011 general election when People’s Action Party’s Sitoh Yih Pin took over as MP. The legacy of the district’s former custodian and veteran opposition figure Chiam See Tong however runs deep in the veins of its residents — and all of them here speak most affectionately of the genuine care and concern he has for them. My Kind of Town aptly concludes with a touching look into how the former MP remains closely connected with the people of Potong Pasir.

In case you haven’t watched it before, it’s now up on Viddsee. Check it out below and see if you too don’t feel a slight tinge of envy for not having that kind of vivid life in your own neighbourhoods.
