Aung San Suu Kyi says she’s not going to turn Myanmar into Singapore

Myanmar’s previous military-backed government was known for its promises to turn the country into the next Singapore.

That obviously didn’t work out – as far as development is concerned.

Newly appointed Aung San Suu Kyi is making no such promises.

At a press conference yesterday, she said she wouldn’t try to shape Myanmar into Singapore.

According to local media reports, she said that the country will be allowed to develop in its own way.

The conference was held a day after Singapore foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan had private, separate, meetings with Suu Kyi and commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.

The army said they discussed peace and stability in Myanmar, as well as development plans.

Ok, so Myanmar’s not going to be Singapore. They could give some of our human rights violations a miss (they probably got enough of their own) but Myanmar’s missing out on living deliciously with our hawker centres, man.
