Teppan Bar Q, where premium Mediterranean-Japanese teppanyaki fare doesn’t hurt your wallet

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — In the entertaining and seriously tasty world of teppanyaki cuisine in Singapore, it has always been a finicky choice between something that’s amazing (but costly) or something that’s friendly on the wallet (yet so-so).

New hot spot Teppan Bar Q however sets fire to all that notion with a well placed spray of grain alcohol on the hibachi. Located in the expat-favoured grounds of Robertson Quay, the contemporary teppanyaki restaurant sells itself as an authentic yet affordable eatery that serves up premium dishes without needing to break the bank.

Ironic as it is that such an affordable spot is found at Robertson Quay — an after-work playground for rich yuppies and white-collar expats — Teppan Bar Q’s aesthetics do fit its surroundings. It’s the second restaurant under the Kyushu-based Ishida Kikaku Group launched here, the first being Bukit Timah’s  popular collagen chicken hotpot eatery Torikin.

Owner and chef Kyota Ishida was in town to personally grill up a storm for customers in his newly opened restaurant, and his easy affability is as contagious as the smiles that erupt once folks take a bite of his dishes.

Though they tout themselves as being reasonably priced, don’t expect simple, straightforward Japanese cuisine that you can find anywhere else. Fusing Mediterranean and Japanese cuisines, the restaurant serves dishes such as Foie Gras and Daikon ($26.80), Octopus Galician Style ($13.90) and Gizzard with Habanero ($9.90), all grilled fresh in front of you.

Chef Ishida also pays tribute to his Hakata district with local favourites such as the Roasted Mentai ($8.90), a full-bodied burst of flavour consisting of marinated roe of pollock and cod. The Tonpei Yaki ($22.90) is a highlight of Hakata too — an eggy hotplate of finely chopped cabbage, slivers of pork and plum-infused soymilk mayonnaise. It really was a refined take on comfort food.

If you’re just there to unwind with drinks, Teppan Bar Q also carries a wide selection of wines from Spain and Japan as well as private-label sakes, cocktails and beers. Check out the new spot at Roberson Walk with special sets starting from $60 — best experienced when seated at the counter, where the warm chefs have a bit of fun with you showing off on the flaming-hot grills.

Teppan Bar Q is at Robertson Walk, 11 Unity Street, #01-21/22. Open daily from 6pm — 12am. Call ’em at 6235 0629.
