Amos Yee returns to court; gets slapped with 8 new charges

Sporting flowing shoulder length locks, the subversive teenager of the hour appeared in court once again to face charges over wounding religious feelings yet again.

Seemingly unperturbed by the experience of getting jailed last year for the same offence, Amos Yee now faces eight new charges that could land him in the slammer yet again, Channel NewsAsia reports. In the State Courts today, the 17-year-old was charged with allegedly wounding the religious feelings of Muslims and Christians, as well as failing to show up for investigations on two occasions. He appeared in court today, representing himself.

The teen’s currently out on bail of $5,000, of which the prosecution did not object to — although they warned that he might commit further offences while out on bail. “If the prosecution insists, no problem”, Yee said.

Of recent days, the boy has upped the ante for offensiveness, recording himself tearing pages of the Quran and doing other extremely provocative acts to the Muslim holy book. If convicted again of deliberately wounding the religious feelings of others, he’ll face up to three years in jail and a fine as well. For failing to report to Jurong Police Division to assist in investigations — despite an order — he faces up to a month’s jail and a fine of up to $1,500.

The pre-trial conference is set for May 30.
