Former LTA officer involved in viral brawl with Uber driver jailed for a day

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) officer involved in violent fisticuffs with an Uber driver at Victoria Street last year has been slapped with a $2,000 fine as well as a day in jail.

The former traffic warden — 51-year-old Tan Hock Guan — pleaded guilty to two charges of causing affray and swearing at 60-year-old Goh Kok Ling.

Last November, Tan saw Goh picking up a passenger from a taxi stand at Bugis Junction and told the Uber driver that cars weren’t allowed. Angry over the severe rebuke, Goh alighted and pushed the warden on the shoulder, challenging him to issue a summons. Vulgarities were exchanged, and Goh threw the first punch, resulting in a brutal scrimmage right there on the street in full view of the peak hour crowd. All of it was captured on camera by the Uber passenger and uploaded on Facebook, where it went viral.

After the fight, Goh had to be taken to hospital for treatment after losing a tooth as well as sustaining a swollen cheek, while Tan was arrested by the police.

Tan came unrepresented in court, and is serving his jail term today. Goh on the other hand is claiming trial to his charges, and will be due in court on Monday for a pre-trial conference.
