Ice cream molten lava cookies are the new ‘in’ thing — get them at Kooks Creamery

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — If you thought the molten lava trend was dying out, think again. The gloriously gooey craze has been given a fresh facelift, thanks to Kooks Creamery and its molten lava cookies. Seriously, it’s perfection. So push aside your diet — you can always start tomorrow (or next week) — and make your way to the new ice cream cafe at Serangoon.

Set up by two sisters, the cosy space is nestled along the same stretch as dessert cafe The Plain Jane, just opposite Serangoon Stadium. Featured here is a modest menu, basically comprising cookies and ice cream. Choose between chocolate and matcha for the molten cookie and ice cream set ($8.50), or just get the cookie and ice cream duo ($7.80) if you’re not keen on that ooze in the middle.

Each cookie is made to order, so you’ll have to wait about 10 minutes for it to turn golden brown in the oven. Once it’s on the plate, ready your cameras, ’cause you’ll wanna capture the moment the scoop of ice cream hits the cookie and molten lava spills out. Crumbly on the outside, the cookies remain soft and chewy on the inside, just the way we like ’em.

If you’re just in the mood for ice cream, the selection on display here won’t disappoint. Each tub is churned fresh daily, and you get to choose from 18 different flavours. A single scoop costs $3.60, a double scoop sets you back $6, and a triple scoop is $8.40, with an additional 50 cents for premium options.

Classic flavours include dark chocolate, coffee, chocolate mint and pistachio, as well as the raspberry lychee sorbet. But you’ll wanna try the more unique ones, which are a result of months of experimentation baking the ‘real’ dessert before creating the ice cream version. For example, the lemon tart and nougat recipes were first perfected, then infused into ice cream. You won’t have to worry about artificial-tasting ingredients here.

As for the popular flavours, brown butter, milk cereal and lemon curd are big winners in our book; otherwise, you can’t go wrong with matcha, Earl Grey, stawberry cheese, Thai milk tea or speculoos. Oh, and for the cookie and ice cream pairings, pretty much anything goes (even matcha on matcha). The decision is yours.

Kooks Creamery is at #01-02, Blk 211 Serangoon Ave 4. Tue-Thur & Sun noon-10pm, Fri & Sat noon-11pm.
