Local residents, who have gathered near the accident area waiting for the obstruction to be cleared, say the tree must be 40 years old. The heavy rains the entire afternoon and possible shallow roots, they say, may have caused the accident.

Tiong Bahru, one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore with about 30 four-storey apartment blocks, was the first project undertaken by the Singapore Improvement Trust, precursor to the Housing Development Board.

Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force are on the scene, and there have been no reports so far of injuries or accidents.

According to a witness, firemen showed up but could not start their chainsaw, so they had to call a contractor.

A foreign worker soon arrived wearing just t-shirt and flip-flops and managed to cut a part of the tree up. More workers followed and they were able to clear the road of the tree by 10:30pm. Reporting by Robin Hicks
