All 3 lifts break down at 33-storey Woodlands HDB block, where mostly elderly reside

Here’s an update on the lift malfunctions plaguing HDB blocks — yet another one has occurred, this time at Block 302A Woodlands Street 31 on Sunday evening. Fortunately, no one was injured by any elevator antics, but with the breakdown of all three lifts for four hours, many residents were left with the choice of staying on the ground floor or climbing the stairs of the 33-storey building. What made things worse was that the Woodlands Peak project was completed just last year, and about half the units were studio apartments housing the elderly, who no doubt struggled to get up the stairs to their homes.

According to the Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council, which manages elevators in the estate, the lifts broke down because of “power supply signals”.

“From our preliminary investigations, there is a signalling fault from the emergency switchboard of the generator to the lift controllers,” a town council spokesman said in The Straits Times‘ report. The town council then disconnected the signal cables, and HDB helped to fix the signal fault.

But two lifts had already stopped working since morning, leaving residents wondering why no one took action earlier, when feedback was given to the maintenance unit around 10.20am. Lift services were finally restored around 10pm, although it is believed that this was not the first time they malfunctioned.
