It took a couple of days, but the mysterious dude who actually managed to successfully execute a bank robbery in Singapore has been nabbed.
According to the Singapore Police Force, the suspect was located and arrested in Bangkok yesterday by the Royal Thai Police. He was apprehended at the Boxpackers Hostel, and is now being detained at an immigration detention centre in Bangkok.The identity of the suspect was apparently established on the same day of the robbery last week, but he had already fled to Thailand by then.
Many folks raised questions why the authorities refused to publish the details of his identity — but they did so out of necessity, it seems.
“The Police did not release further details beyond the initial police statements for operational reasons to ensure the arrest operation was not jeopardized”, they wrote. Right on.
Singapore authorities are currently engaging their counterparts in Thailand to arrange for him to be released into their custody. According to The Straits Times, the suspect — a Canadian — refused to talk to the Thai police and demanded to meet an officer from the Canadian embassy. He couldn’t, even if he was allowed to; the embassy was closed on Sundays.
The fact that the suspect — said to be a Caucasian man — even managed to pull off a bank heist here is pretty surprising, considering Singapore’s all about effective crime-stopping. He simply walked into the Standard Chartered bank at Holland Village last Thursday morning, slipped a teller a piece of paper with his demands and got $30,000 in cash. He didn’t even have a getaway car — the man fled on foot.
Standard Chartered have since installed a Certis Cisco security guard at the branch as a temporary precaution; they didn’t have one when the robbery took place last week.
