Beware fake SCDF officers forcing you to buy fire extinguishers and attend fire safety talks

If someone claiming to represent the Singapore Civil Defence Force pressures you into buying fire extinguishers and fire insurance or attending fire safety talks, be careful. It seems like sales personnel have been going around hard-selling these products, flashing their company passes with photo IDs or the Civil Defence Emergency Handbook to convince people that they represent the SCDF.

Aggressive sales techniques including threats of fines are usually employed.

While SCDF personnel have been conducting home visits to explain the SG Secure initiative, rest assured they do not liaise with any company to sell fire extinguishers or insurance. Plus, it’s not mandatory to keep a fire extinguisher at home — although it is encouraged.

If you ever come across any of these sales people, ask for their warrant card, NS Identity Card or letter of authorisation as proof of their identity. And if your suspicions are confirmed, alert the police.
