Following overwhelming controversy, NUS cancels freshmen Orientation Week

Well, it finally happened. After a long history of indecent ragging and renewed outrage over “sexualised” games, the National University of Singapore called off its annual Orientation Week.

Supposedly taking place next week, the five-day event was cancelled following a decision made during an emergency meeting called by the Office of Student Affairs this afternoon, The Straits Times reported.

The cancellation is effectively the most significant action taken ever since The New Paper made a recent report about the inappropriate ongoings at recent NUS orientation camps. Mostly humiliating and weirdly depraved, the raunchy games were uncomfortable enough for students to make their complaints public.

Following the report, NUS orientation camp organisers were called up for questioning by the school administration, who vowed that “strong disciplinary action” would be taken.

However, the issue seemed to have carried on despite increased public scrutiny. A video of students getting dunked in a pond started circulating yesterday, and it was confirmed that it took place at the NUS Sheares Hall on Wednesday.

“We are deeply disappointed that some of our students have flouted the rules and behaved in an unacceptable manner in organising freshmen activities,” said NUS in a statement. All student-organised team-building activities for freshmen have since been suspended with immediate effect.
