Two neighbouring Boat Quay pubs catch fire on the same morning

Two bars in Boat Quay caught on fire yesterday morning, one after another. English pub The Penny Black saw a fire break out at its second floor kitchen around 9.50am, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force was called in to help. Firefighters extinguished the flames in 20 minutes, and it seems the cause of the fire was a mechanical fault in the deep fryer. Luckily, the damage to the place was minimal; although one kitchen employee suffered a minor burn injury to his right hand, he did not go to the hospital.

Next door at Harry’s Bar, where the second fire occurred, the SCDF was alerted around 11.45am and sent to the rescue once again. This time round, no injuries were reported.

The SCDF is investigating the cause of both incidents.
