Singaporean photographer creates tongue-in-cheek local versions of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’

This is great. Local photographer Jayden Tan has created a photograph series entitled ‘Char Bor’ (meaning ‘woman’ in Hokkien) as a tongue-in-cheek way to commemorate SG51 — and we’re lovin’ it.

Inspired by Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens’ portraits of his daugher, as well as classic 17th century Dutch paintings like the ever-so-recognisable ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, Tan’s collection of images features a local twist.

There’s ‘Char Bor with Two Chilli Packets’ — which is quite possibly the most iconic (and our favourite) — ‘Char Bor with the Dapao Ponytails’ and ‘Char Bor with a Raffia Turban’. All beautifully styled using everyday items like plastic bags, chilli sauce packets and raffia string.

We have to say, the creative talents in Singapore never fail to amaze us.
